Forest Changes by Precipitation Zones in Northern China after the Three-North Shelterbelt Forest Program in China

چکیده

China launched the Three-North Shelterbelt Forest Program (TNSFP) in 1978 northern to combat desertification and dust storms, but it is still controversial ecologically fragile arid semi-arid areas, which partly due uncertainties of monitoring spatial-temporal changes forest distribution. In this study, we aim provide an overall retrospect (i.e., gain loss) during 2007–2017, analyze different precipitation zones. We first generated annual maps at 30 m spatial resolution 2007–2017 through integrating Landsat PALSAR/PALSAR-2 data. found PALSAR/Landsat-based outperform other four existing products JAXA F/NF, FROM-GLC, GlobeLand30, NLCD-China) from either PALSAR or data, with a higher accuracy 96% ± 1%. The analyses forests showed substantial expansion 316,898 34,537 km2 2007 384,568 35,855 2017 central eastern areas. loss rate 35%) zones mean less than 400 mm areas) comparing that 25%) more humid areas), suggests lower surviving drylands. This study provides satellite-based evidence for zones, likely impacts on afforestation effectiveness should be considered future implementation ecological restoration projects like TNSFP.

Modeling the Potential of the Northern China Forest Shelterbelt in Improving Hydroclimate Conditions

The forest shelterbelt (afforestation) project in northern China is the most significant ecosystem project initiated in China during the past three decades. It aims to improve and conserve the ecological environment in the project areas. The tree belt stands along the southern edge of the sandy lands, nearly paralleling to the Great Wall. This study used a regional climate model to simulate the...

Calculating forest biomass changes in China.

Changes in China Fang et al. (1), using forest inventory data to estimate changes in forest biomass carbon storage in China during the past 50 years, demonstrated that China’s carbon storage in living forest biomass has increased since the 1980s. We appreciate their valuable effort; however, the equation used to estimate forest biomass [note 20 in (1)] is questionable. Fang et al. purportedly d...

Geochemical characterization of the forest loess soils along a precipitation gradient in Northern Iran

Introduction: The loess-paleosol sequences in Northern Iran are important archives represent several cycles of Quaternary climate change and can be used to complete the information gap on loess between Europe and central Asia. Loess geochemistry reflects paleoweathering conditions and it can be used to determine the nature and provenance of loess deposits. In the Caspian Lowlands, a pronounced...
